The Society of Conscious Thought’s Gnosis Class Battlecruiser will be the only Battlecruiser sized hull that the Alpha Clones can pilot and it will be the only viable hull they can use to possibly run some Level 4 missions with.

I believe it will become a high demand item for the Alpha Clone gang once they get their skills up but we will have to see what CCP does in regards to the availability of the Gnosis – it looks like every subscribed toon between now and November will be getting one so we could see a flood on the market but once that subsides they could become fairly scarce once the numbers get dwindled down.

I’ve been playing around with some fits for the Gnosis and see some decent PvE options for it. I’m most familiar with Projectile Weapons and Angel Space so the fit below, which is based off of Abbadon21’s Caldari Alpha Clone Mission Fit, is geared towards that and it’s a fit that I believe would make a solid Hi-Sec PvE/Exploration Vessel.

I’d take on Refuge and Dens, I think it could also run the High-Sec Ghost Sites so I would run this with a Mobile Depot in the hold and carry both a Data and a Relic Analyzer which would give you the option to run any Exploration sites you come across.

For the Unrated Complexes I’d go for the Lookout for sure and I’d give the Watch a try but would take it slow to test the waters.

The only DED site it can fit into that you’ll scan down in High-Sec is the 4/10 and I’m not completely sure about it’s ability to run that second room in the 4/10 DED site but it may be doable, another one to take slow and test the waters? The biggest issue with the Gnosis is its speed – she’s a turtle – so while many ships can blitz that second room in the 4/10 the Gnosis will be on field much longer and with 30+ rats engaging it may be too much? It is worth a test though 🙂

I know that there are folks that do it – rat in Supercarriers – but I’d think that most would consider Carrier Ratting the ‘endgame’ of Null-Sec PvE. I do own a Carrier, although my skills are just barely there to fly one, and I’ve done a fair bit of research into Carrier Ratting in preparation of giving it a go at some point (once I grow a pair) so thought I’d share what I’ve found for those of you in the same situation.

It’s a bit of a mystery just how much you can make as I’ve seen people quote numbers ranging from 35mil up to 90/100mil per tick. A lot of pilots are saying they are getting around or near 50mil per tick though so I would assume that’s pretty accurate. In my mind you can put it down to five broad factors that will dictate how much ISK you’re making:

  • Your Skill Levels
  • Which Carrier you’re flying
  • What Fit you’re using
  • What Anomalies you’re running
  • How often you get interrupted

If you’re a max-skilled pilot flying a blingy Nidhoggur in a quiet fully upgraded system with a low true security rating then you could be one of those 90mil per tick fellas but if you’re a low skilled pilot flying a T1 fit Archon in a busier system with a not great security rating you are most assuredly not making that much.

As far as which Carrier is best to use for Ratting the consensus runs as so:

[Best] Nidhoggur > Thanatos > Chimera > Archon [Worst]

The Nidhoggur seems to be the King of Carrier PvE because it gets both a damage bonus as well as speed bonus to its fighters plus it’s most often run with a shield tank so it’s Low slots can be used to fit DDAs instead of armor tank modules.

Fitting your PvE Carrier is pretty straight forward, you want a Networked Sensor Array and multiple Fighter Support Units in the High slots (you may want to reserve one High slot for a Cyno if you are Ratting in a more active System). In the Mid slots you want some Drone Nav Computers and/or Omni Directional Tracking Links and you’ll fill your Low slots with three to four Drone Damage Amplifiers and maybe a Omnidirectional Tracking Enhancer. The rest of you module slots will be up to your specific Carrier hull and what kind of tank you’re fitting. Your Rig choices are all you, some pilots are all about the Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizers for that Warp Speed, others want more tank and there are some that boast the benefits of the Drone Speed Augmentor.

The next big question is which Anomalies should you be running and there are really only three that I’ve seen mentioned:

  • Forsaken Hubs
  • Havens (Rock Haven)
  • Sanctums (Ring Sanctum)

There is a trick for Havens to determine if the one you’re going to is a Rock Haven or not. You initiate warp to the Haven, then cancel warp (ctrl+space), if it’s a Rock Haven it will give you a popup about a gate. If it doesn’t give you a popup you can ignore the site and move on to the next one. I don’t believe there is any trick for determining Sanctum types but if you’ve got one available using a cloaky Scout would be a good option.

Running sites seems to be pretty straight forward as well with pretty much everyone giving the same sequence:

  1. Warp to the site at range and while there is some debate about what that range is, some say 50km others say 100km, all agree that you warp in at range
  2. Immediately start aligning to your out location, ie; Safe Spot, POS, Citadel, Station, you don’t have to worry about drifting out of range Carriers have extremely long lock ranges (4000+km)
  3. Launch all fighters, cycle the NSA (I’d recommend turning off Auto Repeat and just cycle once for each spawn, will save you some Cap) and target everything
  4. Start killing the Rats starting with the Frigates working your way up to the Battleships. With the latest changes to Carriers you shoot the Frigates with the guns and use the missiles to shoot Battleships and the NPC Capitals if they spawn
  5. When you’re a couple of Rats away from clearing the site start aligning to your next one

Some ‘Extra Advice’ for when you take up Carrier Ratting:

  • Have a support network, get on comms and be in the Standing Fleet. If you’re not on comms and ratting solo you deserve to lose your ship!
  • If you are Cyno fit make sure you have the LO in your cargo hold.
  • ALWAYS be aligned to your Safe/Station or that next anom!
  • Carriers are a big investment, don’t take chances with Neutrals. If you get a Neut in system warp to your Safe spot and then after you land recall your Fighters. Fighters can be recalled from anywhere in system you don’t have to be on grid with them.

Good luck with your ticks!

Capacitor batteries have always been good but they’ve gotten even better since the ‘Cap Battery Tiericide’ this past March. I’ve been messing around with some PvE fits and have come up with this Vagabond that is particularly nasty and depending on how much ISK you want to spend it can get even more ridiculous…

First up the ‘Standard’ fit, using mostly T2 modules:

Vagabond - PvE Active Standard

[Vagabond, PvE Active Standard]
Tracking Enhancer II
Gyrostabilizer II
Gyrostabilizer II
Gyrostabilizer II
Tracking Enhancer II

10MN Afterburner II
Large Shield Booster II
Large Compact Pb-Acid Cap Battery
Explosive Deflection Field II

425mm AutoCannon II, Fusion M
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
Core Probe Launcher II, Core Scanner Probe I
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
425mm AutoCannon II, Fusion M

Medium Anti-Explosive Screen Reinforcer II
Medium Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer II

Warrior II x5

A nasty PvE ship that kicks out 515 dps, reps 337 dps, flies around with the AB on at 931 m/s and is cap stable at 45%

— — —

Next up is the ‘Bling’ fit, using lots of Faction modules:

[Vagabond, PvE Active Bling]
Tracking Enhancer II
Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer
Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer
Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer
Tracking Enhancer II

Corelum A-Type 10MN Afterburner
Pith X-Type Large Shield Booster
Republic Fleet Large Cap Battery
Pith X-Type Explosive Deflection Field

425mm AutoCannon II, Fusion M
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
Sisters Core Probe Launcher, Sisters Core Scanner Probe
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, EMP M
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
425mm AutoCannon II, Fusion M

Medium Anti-Explosive Screen Reinforcer II
Medium Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer II

Warrior II x5

This one gets even nastier kicking out 541 dps, reps 566 dps, flies around with the AB on at 1036 m/s and is cap stable at 41%

— — —

And finally comes the ‘Ridiculous’…

[Vagabond, PvE Active Ridiculous]
Tracking Enhancer II
Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer
Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer
Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer
Tracking Enhancer II

Corelum A-Type 10MN Afterburner
Pith X-Type Large Shield Booster
Republic Fleet Large Cap Battery
Pith X-Type Explosive Deflection Field

425mm AutoCannon II, Fusion M
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
Sisters Core Probe Launcher, Sisters Core Scanner Probe
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, EMP M
220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II, Fusion M
425mm AutoCannon II, Fusion M

Medium Anti-Explosive Screen Reinforcer II
Medium Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer II

‘Augmented’ Warrior x5

This one is just stupid… it kicks out 506 dps, reps 859 dps, flies around with the AB on at 1036 m/s and is cap stable at 41% but it also needs the following implants:

Slot 1: High-grade Crystal Alpha
Slot 2: High-grade Crystal Beta
Slot 3: High-grade Crystal Gamma
Slot 4: High-grade Crystal Delta
Slot 5: High-grade Crystal Epsilon
Slot 6: High-grade Crystal Omega
Slot 7: Eifyr and Co. ‘Gunslinger’ Motion Prediction MR-706
Slot 8: Eifyr and Co. ‘Gunslinger’ Medium Projectile Turret MP-806
Slot 9: Eifyr and Co. ‘Gunslinger’ Surgical Strike SS-906

Go pick up your cap batteries now!

Well… it took a couple of days of grinding but I managed to reach that 10,000 point Bronze Level reward for the Shadow of the Serpent event. When I opened the Redeemable Copper Ouroboros I got some decent loot – a Copper Ouroboros Accelerator, a couple of Serpentis Jackets and an Atron Skin. The only sites that had drops were the Serpentis Shipyard and Research Facility sites and I did manage to accumulate a number of the Serpentis Modified Capital Microprocessors as well as a few of the Asklepian Implants but I’m still not really sure how I’m feeling about the event.

The loot I got was not a terrible haul but again I’m not sure if the time that was put in is worth the rewards? I won’t likely attempt to grind towards the next level of reward considering it would be approximately all that time already spent plus another half to get that additional 15,000 points but I may run a few more of the Shipyard and Research Facility sites and see if I can’t get a full set of the Asklepian Implants?

So last night I’m out cruising around in High-Sec giving the Shadow of the Serpent event a try in my Machariel. I’m sticking to low-traffic systems and am not having much issue with competition for the sites, even getting some courtesy with Capsuleers warping out of the site if they land in it after me. The Machariel is clearing the sites quickly and I’m having a bit of fun with the new PvE content but then reality hit and lessons were learned.

How did I die? A fella warped into the site right on top of me while I was smartbombing the Frigates and I got Concorded. How could I have avoided that dumb loss? I guess there are a few things I could have done differently – turning my safety on may have helped or if I had moved off the beacon he wouldn’t have landed on top of me – but the most important thing I learned from that loss is that using smartbombs in ‘public’ High-Sec PvE sites is just plain stupid – DON’T DO IT!

I’ll likely do a few more of the Shadow of the Serpent sites (sans smartbomb), maybe just enough to get that first level of reward, the Copper Ouroboros which requires 10,000 points. In all honesty while I do like the diversity of the challenges I’m not at all stoked on the points grind.

I took advantage of the daily Thrill of the Hunt reward, it was easy and quick to undock and blow up one rat, maybe a little to easy for the reward given, but this event is feeling a little too skewed towards the grind. I ran a few dozen sites last night, finished about a half dozen challenges and that took me at least two maybe closer to three hours and I think I was still below 2,000 points.

For me that is not enough reward for the time put in. It will be interesting to see how others react and how CCP adjusts their events to that reaction… hopefully they can find a solid balance of grind/reward/fun/content?

We’ll see.

I’ve got Kalam skilled into both Caldari and Minmatar Carriers so I’ve been messing around with the Chimera and Nidhoggur trying to get some sort of idea of how to fit them. My thought process is that the Chim would be for PvP and the Nid for PvE but truthfully I don’t know, this is all just conjecture until I can play with numbers once EFT gets updated and then do some trial by fire.

Lets take a look at the Chimera first…

Chimera (5H, 7M, 4L) ~ Caldari Carrier Bonus (per skill level):

  • 4% bonus to shield resistances
  • 5% bonus to Scarab Jamming optimal range

This is just a base thought for a fit – I’ve not played with the fitting in game at all so have no idea if it’ll be viable but at least I’ll have some sort of starting point and I’ve left the rigs out of the equation for now.

[Chimera, PvP Conjecture]
Capital Emergency Hull Energizer or a DCU
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II

Propmod (?)
Capital Shield Booster
Capital Flex Hardener
Shield resist to block hole (?)
Shield resist to block hole or Capital Shield Extender (?)
Capital Shield Extender
Capital Shield Extender

Networked Sensor Array
Fighter Support Unit I
Fighter Support Unit I
sometype of ewar (neut/nos) or a smartbomb (?)
Fighter Support Unit I

And here’s my idea for a fit for the Nidhoggur…

Nidhoggur (5H, 6M, 5L) ~ Minmatar Carrier Bonus (per skill level):

  • 5% bonus to Fighter damage
  • 2.5% bonus to Fighter velocity
  • 5% bonus to Dromi Stasis Webification range

Same as above, just a base thought for a fit, no clue if it’ll be viable.

[Nidhoggur, PvE Conjecture]
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
4th DDA or an Omni Track Enchanc (?)
Damage Control

Propmod or a 2nd DNC or 2nd Omni Tracking Link or Shield Extender (?)
Capital Shield Booster
Drone Navigation Computer I
Omnidirectional Tracking Link I
Rat specific hardener (?)
Capital Shield Extender

Networked Sensor Array
Fighter Support Unit I
Fighter Support Unit I
Fighter Support Unit I
Fighter Support Unit I

I’ll definitely be putting a bunch more time into EFT’ing these boats and then getting 2nd and 3rd opinions from the fitting masters in our crew before taking them out for their first flight so it might be a bit before I get to see what New Eden looks like from the cockpit of a Carrier.

I’ve come up with a few fits for Jugji to try out on the Level 3 Archangel Security missions, an AC and Arty version of the Rupture and a RLML Caracal. I’ll get a couple of each out to his staging area and then once he has got the required Standing test them out in some missions. Even with some unassigned SP that he had (which I put towards a number of skills – Tactical Shield Manipulation to get him into T2 Shield Tank, Missile Bombardment which allows him to use the Missile Guidance Computer and a number of Drone skills for a little boost in that Skill Tree; Drone Avionics, Drone Durability, Drone Interfacing, Drone Navigation, Drone Sharpshooting and Medium Drone Operation) Jugji’s skills still aren’t that solid, he’s sitting at just under 7mil SP with no immediate plans for him to get anymore training.

T1 Cruisers are not the best choice to run L3 missions and these fits will for sure not be the most efficient L3 mission runners but at Jugji’s skill levels they are the best I can come up with and I’m hopeful that they will be good enough to grind through them… we’ll see…

Ratting in Null-Sec is a wholly different experience than all the High-Sec Combat Site explore roams I’ve done… you need to be much more attentive to who and what is going on in the System. If a neutral jumps into the System then getting to a Safe should be tops on your priority list and then you either see if they are engage-able with the ship you’re in, wait it out and hope they leave, or call for help. My current ratting ship is not very PvP friendly so my normal SOP is to get to a safe and wait it out…

I didn’t have a ton of time last night but ran a few Anomalies to test out my fit. I ran one of each in this order; an Angel Rally Point, an Angel Port and an Angel Hub. I’m using a Vexor Navy Issue to run the sites and have modified my fit slightly to get it geared specifically for Angel Combat Sites and she is working very well. The Hub was actually the easiest to tank the incoming DPS but took the longest to clear because of all the Battleships.

I may look into swapping out one of the Omnidirectional Tracking Enhancer II’s for a fourth Drone Damage Amplifier II for some extra DPS but that will actualize a need for a CPU upgrade implant – will have to do the maths and see how much faster things go with the extra DPS before committing to the fit.

I’ve been theorycrafting some fits to use for my foray into Null-Sec ratting and they are coming together fairly well I think…

The thought process towards the fittings needs to be quite different from a fitting I would use for running combat sites in High-Sec as the threat of a PvP engagement is obviously much higher out in Null-Sec. I’ve come up with three different fits and each will do the job just fine, the decision of which ship to use will come down to the current intel situation of the systems I’m around and what kind of sites I’m wanting to run.
