Floti Bjóða – Clusterfuck Roam II

I jumped into the FC chair again and took out my second Clusterfuck Roam last night.

I was fortunate to have Fifth running as our Scout again and on top of Scouting for the Fleet he was acting as my mentor/adviser providing encouragement and offering recommendations when asked for them. Having him there gives me some reassurance that even if I do make a utterly ludicrous decision with the Fleet (which he would let me do ~ learning lessons and all that…) there is a buffer to get the Fleet to safety if need be.

I was pleased with my overall confidence level and had no serious issues with giving clear and decisive orders. I felt that I was solid with my movement of the Fleet gate to gate through Regions and the general maneuvering of the Fleet. Where there is some experience definitely needed is with maneuvering the Fleet within a System when getting ready for an engagement or when engaged and with target selection.

A prime example of my target selection inexperience came last night – we had a Caracal, Cerberus and a Hurricane on grid with us and my call was to Primary the Cerb, thinking it was our biggest threat, with the Hurricane as our Secondary target and while we managed to get both the Caracal got away. After the engagement I asked Fifth if that was the right sequence of targets and he said it was a sound call but that he would have likely called the Caracal as Primary as it would have gone down quickly and we would have gotten the other two with spreading our points – these kind of things will come with experience.

For the duration of the almost three hour roam I had between eight to ten pilots in a mix of T1 Frigates, Intys, Dictors and T3 Dessies. We rolled through the Scalding Pass and Geminate Regions looking for targets of opportunity and we did fairly well for ourselves. We did lose a few ships but we took way more than we lost and most importantly fun was had!

I truly appreciate the CR0WZ Crew for giving me the opportunity to FC and for Fleeting up – Cheers fellas!

Floti Bjóða – Clusterfuck Roam I

With Fifth on board running as a Scout I FC’d my first Fleet last night. Took a few of the crew out for a Null-Sec roam in T1 Frigate, mainly Tristans and Breachers, we did have support from a Sabre and an Ares.

I was pleased with my confidence overall, I felt that I conveyed orders in a clear and decisive manner, kept the fleet maneuvering together and other than a few moments of direction decision hesitation I felt like the Fleet ran quite smoothly… and most importantly we didn’t lose anyone!

We did manage to get a few kills. Caught a Vexor Navy Issue coming through a gate, while scouting Fifth got attacked by a Manticore just after jumping into a system and we took advantage of his aggression timer and then on the way home we took out an ESS just because.

Am looking forward to getting another Fleet out soon, will stick with the small, cheap ships for now though – losing them isn’t such a big deal.

There’s no time like the present… this weekend I will hopefully be taking out the inaugural Clusterfuck Roam.

Over the next couple of days I’ll be getting my homework done. First thing to do is check-in with the Leadership and make sure we’ve got no big ops on the go and if I get the thumbs up, I’ll get a message out to the Alliance giving them a heads up about the roam, plan a route, get some ships ready for those last minute joiners and then brush up on my ship knowledge so that there will be a chance that I don’t whelp us too terribly.

We’ll see how this goes…

Floti Bjóða III

I’m getting much closer to feeling at least semi-confident about taking out a Fleet. It may seem like overkill but I’ve put some work into consolidating a bunch of information into a Fleet SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) which while highly likely will be laughed at by any vets of the game will hopefully be of some use to any newer PvP Capsuleers. Honestly it’s mostly there for me, I tend to grasp things much better when I get them down on ‘paper’ and put the time in to explore, research and grind through the information – it helps me get my thoughts in order.

Regardless of their thoughts I’ll definitely be pointing anyone willing/brave enough to join a Fleet FC’ed by me to it before I undock with the intention being for it to give them at least some semblance of my expectations, outlook and mindset towards PvP Fleet Operations and FC’ing.

I’ll be naming my Fleets…

FC’ing is a complicated task. One of the key components is knowing what you’re shooting at. There are so many ship types in EVE and I am still getting a grip on which is which and what does what… this list helps a ton though: Ship type quick reference

Of course that’s just one small aspect of being a FC – you’ll need to know your own Fleet Doctrine inside out, the lay of the land, the mechanics of the  space you are in, what your pilots are capable of, etc, etc, etc…

I’m still a ways away from giving the FC position a go but I’ll keep on the learning process and continue to soak in everything I can from the FC’s I fly with.

There is a lot that goes into being a good FC in EVE and I’m soaking in all I can from the few good ones I’ve had the pleasure to fly with. FC’ing is something I’d like to tackle at some point so I’ve been putting in time looking at different FC guides, Fleet prep checklists, and stuff on target selection. I’ve got a long ways to go before I’ll be comfortable taking out a serious Fleet but I think I could handle a small T1 Frigate Fleet for some action. With my military background I’ll likely run a tighter Fleet than most do and have been preparing a Checklist of my own to go through.

FC Checklist
