So last night I’m out cruising around in High-Sec giving the Shadow of the Serpent event a try in my Machariel. I’m sticking to low-traffic systems and am not having much issue with competition for the sites, even getting some courtesy with Capsuleers warping out of the site if they land in it after me. The Machariel is clearing the sites quickly and I’m having a bit of fun with the new PvE content but then reality hit and lessons were learned.

How did I die? A fella warped into the site right on top of me while I was smartbombing the Frigates and I got Concorded. How could I have avoided that dumb loss? I guess there are a few things I could have done differently – turning my safety on may have helped or if I had moved off the beacon he wouldn’t have landed on top of me – but the most important thing I learned from that loss is that using smartbombs in ‘public’ High-Sec PvE sites is just plain stupid – DON’T DO IT!

I’ll likely do a few more of the Shadow of the Serpent sites (sans smartbomb), maybe just enough to get that first level of reward, the Copper Ouroboros which requires 10,000 points. In all honesty while I do like the diversity of the challenges I’m not at all stoked on the points grind.

I took advantage of the daily Thrill of the Hunt reward, it was easy and quick to undock and blow up one rat, maybe a little to easy for the reward given, but this event is feeling a little too skewed towards the grind. I ran a few dozen sites last night, finished about a half dozen challenges and that took me at least two maybe closer to three hours and I think I was still below 2,000 points.

For me that is not enough reward for the time put in. It will be interesting to see how others react and how CCP adjusts their events to that reaction… hopefully they can find a solid balance of grind/reward/fun/content?

We’ll see.

Curious about how to kill some time in New Eden while you wait out your Jump Clone timer… maybe give mining in a bait fit Retriever a go and see how many gank attempts you can foil?

After jumping clone to High-Sec to inject some skills I got really bored and spent a few hours killing time mining yesterday in a tanky Retriever and managed to foil three gankers; Ganker #1, Ganker #2, Ganker #3. The second fella was the hardest of the three, he must have been the highest skilled of the lot, had me down to 25% structure before CONCORD got him. These were all solo gank attempts, I figure this ruse will only last a little while and the more serious gankers will catch on to the game I’m playing and at some point will either double/triple up on me or just not try at all.

I think the fit I’m using may stand up to two lower skilled gankers, maybe even one lower skilled – one higher skilled, but there is no chance of it surviving three gank fit Cats – for those interested here’s the fit I’m mining with:

[Retriever, Rockhammer]
Damage Control II
Reinforced Bulkheads II
Reinforced Bulkheads II

Medium Ancillary Shield Booster, Cap Booster 50

Strip Miner I
Strip Miner I

Medium Transverse Bulkhead I

Acolyte II x5

With all V’s she’s got over 25,000 EHP, reps 109 EHP/s with an overheated MASB (you better be overheating!) and kicks out 87 dps with the Acolyte II’s. Fully fit she will cost you around 40,000,000 ISK – she doesn’t mine very efficiently though and it is highly improbable you’ll make even 10,000,000 ISK per hour with her so if you don’t lose her you have the possibility to make back that investment in about 4 or 5 hours.

She’s maybe not the wisest investment but if you’ve got some ISK to burn and occasionally some time to kill then she can be an entertaining way to kill that time – it is fun to watch those gankers, fully expecting another easy Retriever kill, get shot down by CONCORD while you’re still on grid with them.

Took Demonic Pygmy out for another High-Sec roam last night. Hit about a dozen Angel Refuge anomalies and managed to get one High-Sec Angel’s Red Light District escalation which the RL brother was able to help me out with. Also scanned down one DED Complex, an Angel Repurposed Outpost.

I didn’t get anything epic from the Repurposed Outpost, just the 7th Tier Overseer’s Personal Effects, and the Red Light District dropped a Gistum B-Type Explosive Deflection Amplifier and the 18th Tier Overseer’s Personal Effects.

I had a couple of the 18th Tier OPE’s and a number of the lesser ones but I wasn’t sure what to do with them. All it took was a quick ask in our Alliance/Corp channels and I had set my destination for the nearest CONCORD Station… the higher Tier OPE’s are solid ISK, the 18th Tier OPE is worth $43,200,000.00! The lesser ones not so much but it all adds up.

After dropping off the OPE’s and selling off some of the loot I’ve got over the last couple of days of High-Sec exploration Demonic Pygmy has paid for herself and then some so I treated her to some upgrades and with her being strictly a High-Sec boat, one that I won’t fly during a War-dec, I felt the upgrades are worth the risks she takes.

I already had two of the Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizers so used those and picked up a third which boost the DPS up nicely, added a Pith X-Type Explosive Deflection Field which kicks the Explosive Resistance to 82% and upgraded the third Shield Extender to the T2 version giving her an EHP of over 40,000. I’m working towards T2 Medium Projectiles currently, they’re a couple weeks away, once they are fit she’ll be prime and will absolutely slice through any 3/10 or 4/10 DED site.

Jita Stǫðva

I was out wandering yesterday afternoon looking to find some CONCORD action in Naglfar – RAGE™ and my route had me jumping through Jita. I jumped into Perimeter, one system before Jita, and held cloak while I checked local. It was busy but I didn’t see anyone flashing with a Criminal or Suspect Flag and there was only one war target in system, Althur Kruw, so I hit the warp to zero towards the Jita Gate and hit my cloak on the way in. As I came out of warp I could see the Gate was busy but didn’t really think anything of it. As I neared the Gate I started de-cloaking and then I started spamming the jump button and then this appeared…

“Officials have closed the starGates to Jita due to heavy congestion. Travelers are advised to seek alternate routes.”

This was not something I had seen before and it took me a few seconds to be fully cognizant of what it meant. Unfortunately by the time I read the message and started to look for a spot to warp away to Mr.Kruw had me locked up and pointed.

My initial reaction was to run away so I aligned and overheated my prop mod but I was running with an Afterburner and it just wasn’t enough speed to get me out of range so I targeted him back and aggressed but it was too late. I had waited too long and I got popped – Hound (Stealth Bomber) & Capsule – Genolution ‘Auroral’ 197-variant.

In hindsight with the fit I was flying my initial reaction of ‘Run!’ was misguided, what I should have done was aggressed right away. If I had both the ECM – Ion Field Projector II on him I likely could have disrupted his targeting and escaped.

Yet again… “This is EVE ~ Shipwrecks happen!

Leika Skyndiliga

I work a few jobs so some weeks my evening play time is either very limited or non-existent all together. Last night I worked an odd three hour evening shift so had time to get home and log in for a bit.

I didn’t want to stray too far so stuck pretty close to Hek hoping to get in on some CONCORD responses. Towards the end of my online time I was camping one of the belts in Hek where there was a Retriever mining and things were pretty uneventful for the most part so I was getting ready to dock up and log off but then Whiskey Blaze popped up on grid in a Coercer

He had a couple of buddies follow him in, one in a Stabber Fleet Issue and the other in a Catalyst. We were thinking (hoping) that the Cat would go after the Retriever but the Retriever warped off shortly after the three finished their warp-in.

We hung out waiting to see if the Retriever pilot would come back, could have been a bot after all, he didn’t but a Venture did warp-in and even with the two destroyers and cruiser on grid the Venture pilot went right to mining???

Venture’s are not really what we would consider prime gank bait but all four of these fellas looked to be newer to EVE so the results of the engagement are not all that surprising.

So we are left with four ships on grid; the mining Venture, a Coercer, a Catalyst and a Stabber Fleet Issue (I guess that’d be six if you include our two stealth bombers). I’m still fairly new back to EVE but I’ve been spending a fair amount of time camping gank bait and have never seen a Coercer or SFI perform a gank so was totally focused on thinking that the Catalyst would be the aggressor and was perplexed when I saw Whiskey Blaze’s Coercer start approaching and then orbiting the Venture.

He didn’t appear to be in a hurry, spent about a minute orbiting the Venture before he shot and got his Criminal flag. We uncloaked lickety-split, locked him up and popped him before CONCORD even had time to respond.

It was nice to get a little action before having to head to work for the evening.

Fylgja Lǫgsǫgumaðr

Spent last night hanging with some mates helping the Police respond to criminal activity in Hek and it was a busy night for CONCORD. We had scads of fun joining in on CONCORD’s destruction of some High-Sec parasites.

The CODE. bunch don’t seem to get our motives they think we’re trying to save everyone but that’s not the case – we don’t particularly care who they kill, those parasites are content for us – but when it happens we sure do enjoy the Anti-Gank. I did manage to help CONCORD destroy a few criminals last night; Catalyst, Catalyst and a Moa but I’m not sure if we saved any miners?

Now while CONCORD does not punish pilots with a Suspect Flag they also do not interfere with pilots who do punish those with a Suspect Flag and poor Jinn Khaleesi was out looting wrecks in Hek last night and got our attention a few times… Vexor, Capsule, Probe, Capsule.

I had a fun night with the mates!
